REGISTRATION AND COPYRIGHT
SERVICES
Protect your scripts!
Copyright and/or register your material before sharing it with
anyone. A U.S. Copyright can only be granted and issued by the
United States Government and provides the most protection for
writers. Copyrighted works may be eligible for statutory damages
and attorney's fees in successful litigation.
Registration does not take the place of copyrighting with the U.S.
Copyright Office. Registration services are offered by several
organizations and simply provide a time/date stamp which may be
considered valid legal evidence of possession.
Registration - The Writer's
Guild of America (WGA) is the most recognized source for registration
services. There are branches for the east coast and the west
coast with the Mississippi River serving as the dividing line.
You do not have to be
a member of the WGA to use the online registration service.
Simply follow the online instructions to complete the registration
form, upload your file (all formats are accepted), and pay the
registration fee with your Visa or MasterCard. Fees for
non-members are $20 at WGA West and $22 at WGA East. Both
branches charge $10 for members. Upon completion, a WGA
Registration Number is received instantly. A formal certificate
will be sent to you via mail.

Copyright - You do not have to
hire an attorney to file for a copyright. Self-service forms,
helpful information and instructions are available on the U.S.
Copyright Office website. Complete the appropriate application
form. Form PA is used to apply for a copyright of performing art
works, including scripts.
Form TX is used to apply for a copyright of other literary works,
including books. Mail your completed form to the Library of
Congress Copyright Office with a non-returnable copy of the material to
be copyrighted and a check for payment of the copyright fee in the
amount of $45 made payable to 'Register of Copyrights'. It is
advisable to send your package via certified mail, return receipt
requested, so that you have proof of receipt. Processing times
vary, but if you do everything correctly the first time, and your work
is deemed eligible for copyright, a certificate will generally be
issued to you within approximately 4 months. The copyright will
be retroactively effective as of the date the Copyright Office receives
all the required elements in an acceptable form. If you have any
concerns, seek the advice and professional assistance of an attorney
specializing in intellectual property law.
